"Haeckel" was an experiment in abstract shapes. Completely inspired by Ernst Haeckel's anatomical illustrations of microscopic sea life, like diatoms and foraminiferas, this piece combines some of my favorite funky shapes found in his work. As a geology major, we studied paleontology and hundreds of fossils, sediments, and rock types. I always found the microscopic fossils to be absolutely fascinating, so when I found Hackel's work, I knew I needed to make a piece about it.
David recently made this gorgeous hard maple frame to accent the black and provide high contrast. I love the depth and dimension it gives this piece. It really makes it all pop!
