This piece experiments with burnt texture and color in a new way for Renee. When working, Renee must decide early in the burning process if a piece will feature color additions or not. This is because adding color overtop of a burned composition can obscure the delicate details of an intricate design. In this piece, a thorough effort of shading and texture has been accomplished prior to adding any colors or highlights. Uniquely, rather than filling in this design, the colors emanate out from it like an aura. The effect is striking; as if the tropical plants reject being captured without their pigments, or perhaps as though we are seeing familiar flowers at night while remembering their daylit glory.
